With GDPR it became more important than ever to do all that was reasonable to secure customer data. In a matter of days Google Chrome 68 (the most used browser worldwide) will be launching, which will mark all websites without a Security Certificate as 'Not Secure' in increasingly clear terms (i.e. clearer warnings). And all the other browsers (Firefox, Edge, Safari, Opera, etc) will be following suit.

To be clear, this doesn't mean your website has suddenly become 'insecure', rather that there isn't an encrypted connection between the visitors computer/device and your website. If they're just browsing then the lack of encryption has a low likelihood of being a security risk; however if they are submitting information, eg. on a contact form, purchasing an item, etc then it does matter.

While there are different levels of security certificate (validation), they are mostly unnecessary for smaller websites and a Simple Security Certificate is fine. It provides the same level of encryption but doesn't include a huge warranty if the security certificate fails, but that's most unwarranted (pardon the pun).
