To register a .uk domain you need to first have the .co.uk ending as this is authorised to have first-right over registering the .uk domain name. If you held the domain on the 28th of October 2013 then you have this 'grandfathering' right, .co.uk domains registered after then also get this right if there is no conflict in interest in the domain.
If you see a domain name is available it doesn't mean you can register it unless you have the rights, so please first go to the 'Rights Lookup Tool' from Nominet, who are the central registry for all domain names ending in .uk (including .co.uk .org.uk and so on).
- Check your domain rights first: http://www.dotuklaunch.uk/rights-lookup-tool
- If you have checked the above, then please continue to register your .UK domain name.
